Los Angeles Loves… 25
Hi, it’s been awhile. We only come out of retirement maybe a few times a year to do stuff in Los Angeles and really only when we can put together a night that will bring people together. But it’s been five years since we’ve done this so we’d better make it a good one. In this case, four artists that we love have agreed to play a little show at one of our longtime favorite venues in town, Genghis Cohen.
The legendary Chinese restaurant was once one of the best A&R hot spots in LA where not too long after the stage was opened in 1990 (known as Genghis Cohen Cantina), Weezer was playing their earliest shows there and Joni Mitchell, Beck, and Jackson Browne could pop-up on stage at anytime. And we bet even Swifties and KatyCats (and the venue owners Marc Rose and Med Abrous of Call Mom) don’t know that Taylor and Katy (playing Christian folk/pop under her birth name Katheryn Hudson) played their first LA shows there. All these legends played a 50-capacity chapel with bench seating in pews and even today the venue has been hosting some of our favorite shows over the last year by Maple Glider, Provoker, and a ton of punk shows. So as Genghis nears its 40th anniversary, we decided to hold our own silver jubilee there and present what we believe is one that pays homage to the great music we’ve seen on those sacred grounds.
Frances Whitney is an LA newcomer who has already performed sold-out shows at the Winston House and the Troubadour in recent months along with some hotly-tipped showcases at this year’s Canadian Music Week. Listen to any of the three songs she’s released in 2024 and you’ll quickly understand how much talent is pouring out of her. We promise she won’t be playing rooms this small in the very near future. Australia-born Alexander Biggs was residing in Los Angeles when the events of 2020 came and almost ruined the build-up to what we consider to be one of the best albums of the century in 2021’s Hit or Miss. He has since returned to LA to give it another go, playing some of our favorite showcases at SXSW back in March and releasing two tortured heart tunes in recent months including the devastating “pocket protector.” This guy is the real deal. If there are any “la-underground” readers left in the world, you are no stranger to the music of Nate Cole. We have told Nate on several occasions that he is pound-for-pound one of our favorite singer-songwriters we’ve ever heard. His band Castledoor was beloved in LA for much of the 2000’s and he has remained a quiet artistic force as a solo indie musician releasing such gems as “Sera,” “If You Live Long Enough” and our forever fav “I Believe in Love.” We welcome back Nate with open arms. Longtime fans of Céline del Carmen know her past life as an aspiring pop star, but her turn as an indie artist may be the x factor we’ve all been waiting for. She’s been playing all the big new music showcases in town while releasing alt-pop confections like her latest single “Hollywood Blvd.” And it’s only a matter of time before the word on Céline breaks through to the masses.
Thanks to all these artists and everyone who’s ever been apart of the last 25. We love you all.
